Learn to count and get a good grade at GCSE!

- By Jo

This week I have been teaching some year 11 students. We have been preparing for their impending doom, a.k.a. their French GCSE listening exam, all but weeks away. Before attempting some practice questions, I thought I'd quiz them on their numbers... after all it's a topic that's pretty much bound to come up in the exam. While a few of the students were pretty confident, many more were slightly confused... and others started to panic!

So what is it that makes French numbers so difficult to learn for native English speakers? Indeed the concept of "four twenties" (quatre-vingts) meaning 80 and "sixty fifteen" (soixante-quinze), meaning 75 is a little strange for us (and as one boy put it perhaps "too mathematical"). I cannot stress enough, however, how important it is to learn those numbers (whatever the language). In GCSE and even A-Level terms it could be the extra mark you need that means the next grade up. So, don't throw away marks...get learning!

Join us, tutors!

I am so excited! After months of being clever and technical and creative, the Linguipod team are ready to take registrations from language tutors as of today.

So…are you going to sign up? Do you know someone who might be interested? Please let them know about us! We are looking for tutors of all languages (including English), so that we can kick start this site with a bang. We think you’ll find that if you take a look at the site, you’ll want to be part of it. We don’t think you’ll find another site dedicated to language tuition that’s as easy to use…and we love the bright colours too; after all, who said language tuition had to be dull?

Languages help you do Rocket Science

Today, while teaching a group of year 10 students I got asked the inevitable question, "Miss, why do we learn French?" I started talking about how useful knowing a language was for jobs etc. (the usual things that language teachers say), and another boy, overhearing, turned round and said “I need it for university. I’m going to do Particle Physics at Warwick and they said I need a GCSE language”. I couldn’t have put it better myself...

With competition for places being as fierce as ever, some universities are now demanding a GCSE language as an entry requirement for certain courses…so, that decision not to continue a language at year 10 could cost you later! Hopefully if you are doing a languages GCSE course right now, this should serve as a great motivator, whatever you want to do in future... Keep this in mind in the run up to exam time, or while you’re struggling with that piece of Controlled Assessment!
